Photography Guide to Vagamon: Best Spots, Golden Hours & Tips
Vagamon is a photographer's plateau. The combination of dramatic valley scenery, mist behaviour, tea estate geometry, and ever-changing light creates opportunities for genuinely exceptional images at almost any time of day. This guide covers the best locations, optimal timings, and how to make the most of your time — starting with the view from your balcony at Simons Holidays.
Starting Point: Your Balcony
Do not underestimate the photography potential of your own balcony. At Simons Holidays, every room faces the valley — and the view from a private balcony changes dramatically over the course of a day:
- 5:45 AM: First light catches the highest peaks while the valley below remains in mist. Silhouettes of near trees against a brightening sky.
- 6:30 AM: Mist in the valley lit from below by the rising sun — a golden fog effect.
- 4:30 PM: Afternoon clouds backlit by the western sun. Dramatic light beams possible.
- 7 PM: If the sky is clear, the horizon turns deep red after sunset. Often the best 10 minutes of the day photographically.
Eagle View Point (2 min from resort)
The ridge overlooking the full Pullikkanam valley. Best shots:
- Sunrise (5:45–6:30 AM): Mist sea in the valley with peaks above. Bring a tripod — you will need it for long-exposure mist shots.
- Sunset (5:30–6:15 PM): The valley walls change colour rapidly. Work fast.
- Post-rain afternoons: Fresh mist building in the valley — extraordinary light.
Tea Estates
The geometric perfection of tea estate rows makes for compelling pattern photography. Best shot with a long lens to compress the perspective and stack the rows. Early morning is best — the dew on the leaves catches the light, and estate workers are present, adding human scale to the landscape.
Thangal Para Pine Forest
The pine forest near Vagamon is unlike anything else in Kerala. Straight trunks, a carpeted forest floor, and dramatic light shafts on misty mornings. Shoot looking upward through the canopy for geometric compositions.
Vagamon Lake
The lake's reflective surface on calm mornings mirrors the surrounding hills perfectly. Best before 8 AM when the water is still and the light is soft.
Infinity Pool Shots at Simons Holidays
The resort's infinity pool is one of Vagamon's most-photographed subjects. Tips:
- Shoot from pool level looking outward for the horizon-merge effect
- Early morning (6–7 AM) for soft light and empty pool
- Afternoon clouds behind the valley for dramatic depth
- Ask a companion to enter the pool for human scale
Camera Settings Notes
- Mist shots: Expose for the highlights in the mist, not the shadow areas
- Tea estates: Polarising filter cuts reflections from wet leaves dramatically
- Golden hour: Bracket your exposures — the dynamic range in valley shots is extreme
